Position Description

NAEYC is seeking a Deputy Chief Executive for Finance and Operations to join our executive team. This position is responsible for the development and oversight of NAEYC's financial management strategy and contributes to the development and execution of the organization's strategic priorities.  The Deputy Chief is charged with developing and implementing comprehensive policies and procedures in finance and operations and provides leadership and strategic oversight to the following teams: finance, association and building operations and information technology.


The individual must possess a demonstrated track record of creative and innovative successes along with the ability to effectively operationalize a vision.  It is imperative that the individual is a strong and effective leader and manager of people who knows and understands how to motivate individuals and teams for collaborative success. 


The individual must demonstrate his/her ability to be a systems thinker'ensuring the organization's strategic direction is recognized through strong financial frameworks, thoughtful and thorough business decisions and effective processes and systems.   The individual must collaborate and support colleagues in other divisions so that the larger organizational vision is effectively and efficiently implemented.


The ideal candidate has a strong background in finance, operational and executive level experience and a proven track record in creative problem-solving and change management. 


Primary Responsibilities and Key Objectives

Strategy, Vision, Leadership

  • Advise the CEO, executive and management teams on financial planning, budgeting, accounting, cash flow, investment priorities and policy matters.
  • Partner with the CEO and executive management team on all operational and strategic issues as they arise; provide strategic recommendations to the CEO based on financial analysis and projections, cost identification and allocation and revenue/expense analysis.
  • Effectively staff the National Governing Board Finance Committee ensuring that those charged with governance possess the financial information required to perform their duties.
  • Advise the National Governing Board Finance Committee related to issues, trends and changes in the operation model and delivery mechanisms.
  • Engage with members of the executive management team to facilitate cross-department collaboration that ensures all financial, IT and operational solutions positively support NAEYC's evolving strategy, operational delivery and data collection and analysis needs.
  • Work in concert with the General Counsel and Assistant Secretary to manage the annual audit with external auditors.  Ensures that all required financial records and reports for the audits and tax returns are prepared in a timely manner.
  • Contribute to the development of NAEYC's strategic priorities and desired results and to the daily leadership and management of the organization.
  • Represent NAEYC externally particularly in financial, banking and building negotiations and transactions.

Team Development and Leadership

  • Oversee, direct, and organize the work of the finance and operations teams.
  • Promote a culture of high performance, inclusion, and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality.
  • Ensure finance and operations team members receive timely and appropriate training and professional development.
  • Establish and monitor finance and operations staff performance and development goals, assign accountabilities, set objectives, establish priorities and conduct annual performance appraisals.
  • Mentor and develop finance and operations staff based on NAEYC's internal culture framework.
  • Evaluate the finance and operations division structure and team plan for continual improvement of the efficiency and effectiveness of the team as well as supporting the professional growth and development of individual team members.

Finance and Operations

Provide strategic and tactical oversight to the following operations:

  • Implementation of appropriate system policies, standard operating procedures, internal controls and accounting standards.
  • Financial administration, business planning, and financial analysis.
  • Tax, budget, banking, investments and audit functions.
  • Advice and analysis to managers and executive team on financial performance and the fiscal implications of contracts and business decisions.
  • Protecting the assets of the association and mitigate risk.
  • Preparation of the annual operating budgets for recommendation to the Finance Committee and the Governing Board.
  • Management of cash and investments; working with banks and/or investment advisors to make sure organization's funds are prudently managed and invested according to the approved investment policy.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with non-profit accounting standards, GAP and Sarbanes-Oxley.
  • Association operations is proactive, well managed, supported and operating efficiently and effectively including publishing fulfillment and inventory and control, data governance, vendor management, space leasing in owned building, tenant services, and association administrative support.
  • Building operations promotes a safe, secure, well-maintained and professional looking environment.
  • Information Technology is a proactive, secure, strategic, customer oriented and effective operation, with a clear and strong direction for the development, deployment and utilization of all hardware and software; including on-site data center and off site hosting.



  • Business, accounting or related degree required, MBA and/or CPA preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years' experience in a senior management role ideally with both external audit and in-house financial management experience gained in a high performing organization.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proven track record of success in facilitating progressive organizational change and development within a growing organization.
  • Excellent judgment and creative problem solving skills including negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Strong mentoring, coaching experience to a team with diverse levels of expertise.
  • Entrepreneurial team player that can multitask.
  • Superior management skills; ability to influence and engage direct and indirect reports and peers.
  • Collaborative and proactive; a team leader who can positively and productively impact both strategic and tactical finance and operations initiatives. 
  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with senior management, NAEYC's National Governing Board and staff. 
  • Ability to operate as an effective tactical and strategic thinker. 
  • Computerized Accounting Systems, Great Plains a plus, and Microsoft Office.
