The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) is seeking a Policy Communications Specialist II. NAEYC is a professional membership organization that works to promote high-quality early learning for all young children, birth through age 8, by connecting early childhood practice, policy, and research. NAEYC advances a diverse, dynamic early childhood profession and supports all who care for, educate, and work on behalf of young children.

The Policy Communications Specialist II develops and coordinates strategic, timely, and relevant communications, outreach, and advocacy alerts to NAEYC members, Affiliates, and constituents across multiple platforms and media. As part of the Policy and Professional Advancement team, and with support from the Director of Advocacy and colleagues as well as the Marketing, Membership and Professional Learning teams, this individual will be responsible for ensuring that the field, NAEYC's members, and our partners know about and are connected to NAEYC's advocacy and policy work in order to support members and advance NAEYC's vision and goals for an equitable, diverse, well-prepared and well-compensated early childhood education profession and high-quality, developmentally-appropriate early childhood education.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • In partnership with the Director, Advocacy, create and manage the policy and advocacy content calendar
  • Provide day-to-day coordination of the policy and advocacy content calendar, including writing copy for multiple media and social media platforms and for multiple audiences
  • Manage the distribution of NAEYC's policy newsletters to ensure weekly and monthly communications, and policy / advocacy focused social media content to ensure daily and weekly engagement
  • Contribute policy and advocacy content to NAEYC's organizational newsletters and outreach efforts in partnership with NAEYC's Marketing team
  • Draft organizational rapid responses to current events, and press releases
  • Develop templates, talking points, and resources to share with NAEYC's Affiliates and members to support their advocacy and media engagement
  • Manage repository for shared resources across all audiences
  • Coordinate, and, as needed, facilitate webinars, presentations, and events that share the accomplishments, resources, and learnings of NAEYC, Affiliates, state partners, and members
  • Serve as lead within NAEYC for policy and advocacy content as liaison to marketing and other NAEYC departments
  • Serve as key liaison with communications staff of partner organizations
  • Manage the relationships with NAEYC's consultants for media outreach, in order to ensure alignment and appropriate sequencing in messaging and overall organizational communications strategies
  • Work collaboratively within NAEYC and with external partners to ensure alignment between communication strategies that advance our shared goals
  • Performs other work related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position

The Policy Communications Specialist II will not be directly supervising any part or full-time staff.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Associate's, Bachelors degree or equivalent experience required; with a focus in communications and/or early childhood education preferred.
  • 3-5 years of experience with external communications, organizing, policy, or advocacy.
  • Excellent communication skills, particularly related to communication of complex policy to lay audiences, including writing for multiple platforms and audiences.
  • Expertise and fluency with social media and knowledge of ECE traditional and social media landscape.
  • Must be able to explain commitment to and experience with work to advance equity.
  • Bilingual Spanish and English a plus, but not required
  • This position requires travel and is considered nonessential.
