Position Description

The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) is seeking a Senior Creative Design Manager within the Member Engagement, Brand Advancement & Professional Learning Marketing and Membership department. NAEYC is a professional membership organization that works to promote high-quality early learning for all young children, birth through age 8, by connecting early childhood practice, policy, and research. NAEYC advances a diverse, dynamic early childhood profession and supports all who care for, educate, and work on behalf of young children.

The role of the Senior Creative Design Manager (SCDM) is to oversee the development of compelling and visual design and efficient design production processes for all departments within the organization. This position will lead a team focused on efficiently developing strong visual designs for publications, marketing materials, Annual Reports and other projects all with a heavy emphasis on digital design and how it can be leveraged to introduce new and existing audiences to NAEYC content. The SCDM will be responsible for maintaining a set of visual design style guidelines for the association that ensure materials are consistent and reflective of a unified NAEYC brand identity.

The SCDM must have strong written and oral communication skills, demonstrable creative design competencies, and the ability to effectively apply these attributes across a variety of existing and emerging media. This role requires positive, proactive interpersonal skills and the ability to successfully mentor developing staff. The SCDM must be able to analyze the production process to identify weaknesses and strengths and institute systems that increase productivity and efficiency.

The SCDM is responsible for tracking all work requests, project management, and coordinating the in-house and freelance resources. A deep knowledge base of design and production software is required, in conjunction with an in-depth understanding of graphic design production workflow, including conventional and digital printing, binding, and mailing processes. The SCDM must be able to analyze the production process to identify weaknesses and strengths and institute systems that increase productivity and efficiency.

Duties and Responsibilities

Training and Experience:

  • Bachelor degree in visual design preferred
  • Five years minimum of working in web and multimedia design, some time within a design firm is preferred
  • Experience in brand development and brand management preferred
  • Five years minimum of graphic design experience in a management role, including book and periodical production

Technical Skills:

  • Expert user of Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Quark, Word, PowerPoint, and Acrobat
  • Demonstrate a high proficiency in XML, HTML, Flash, Flash scripting and Dreamweaver, with knowledge of emerging digital media

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

  • Skilled editorial and writing experience
  • Proven ability to collaborate with other communications departments (e.g. marketing, web)
  • Proven track record in delivering products on time and on budget
  • Proven track record in managing and developing design and production talent
  • Ability to conceptualize and effectively communicate creative graphic ideas and efficiently execute them
  • Ability to problem solve and manage teams flexibly

Physical Demands:

  • Work in a general office setting
  • Close screen work for sustained periods
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Some travel may be required
